I have an Traxdata 6S52, which is an 52x24x52 drive quite similar to the
LiteOn 52x. Recently I noticed a big problem when burning 80 minute
CD-Rs at full speed. Right at minute 74, the drive stops, spins the disk
down, makes some clicking noise (*shudder*), spins the CD-R up again,
repeats the procedure about three minutes, then (if I didn't stop it by
pushing eject, which in turn surprised me by working) burns the last 6
minutes without a problem. When I check the CD-R afterwards, there's a
large error block at the stop-and-go position. After that position (if I
didn't cancel) the data is fine.
I checked a few things and have trouble explaining why this happens.
The following came to my mind:
1.) At minute 80, the drive reaches 53x. Or, more precisely, the drive
exceeds 52x when burning more than 74 minutes. Does the firmware have a
problem with this?
2.) I tried other CD-R brands. Same effect. Definitively the burner.
3.) I tried simulation only. The effect did not occur, which means: It's
not a head positioning problem. Good.
4.) I can burn 12x CD-RW media. I'm no pro, but I think this requires
alot of heat and thus a good laser. So my laser is ok.
5.) I can burn the same data at 40x (I might try higher speeds when I'm
in the mood for wrecking CD-R media)
Yep, firmware is the latest (or, the only) available. Burning software
was Nero.
So why the hell that clicking noise? This freaks me out. Is my drive
damaged or is it just not capable of burning 80min@52x? Did anyone have
similar experiences?
I'd appreciate if anyone could tell me my drive is ok, since the
predecessor was a warranty case and I don't want to bring it in *again*.
It's the firmware, right?
Thanks for any clue,
Korkman
