This is not the CD-Recordable Frequently Asked Questions posting, but
rather a pointer to it. I'm posting this because there may be propagation
problems with the FAQ (it's rather large for a Usenet posting), and some
sites have automatic filters that think it's spam. This is also going
out to newsgroups that don't normally see the FAQ.

The FAQ is posted approximately once a month to the comp.publish.cdrom.*
newsgroups, news.answers, and comp.answers. It is an "official" Usenet
FAQ, and can be obtained wherever finer FAQs are found. Reading the FAQ
before posting a question to the newsgroups is recommended.

The canonical HTML version of this FAQ is available from:
http://www.cdrfaq.org/

A more generic text-to-HTML conversion is here:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/cdrom/cd-recordable/part1/preamble.html

The text version, archived from the four-part Usenet posting, is here:
ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet-by-group/comp.publish.cdrom.hardware/

Some translations are available (may be somewhat out of date):
Hungarian: http://delfin.klte.hu/~nagysz/cdrgyik/
French: http://www.lagravuredecd.com/
Russian: http://members.tripod.com/greatkorzhik/cdrfaq.htm
Italian: http://web.tiscali.it/marzonaontheweb/faq/faq.html
Spanish: http://cdrfaq.webcindario.com/CDRfaq.htm

If you don't have web access, you can request a plain text copy of the FAQ
by e-mail like this:

To: mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu
Subject: foo

send faqs/cdrom/cd-recordable/part1
send faqs/cdrom/cd-recordable/part2
send faqs/cdrom/cd-recordable/part3
send faqs/cdrom/cd-recordable/part4

Put the "send" lines in the body of the message, one per line. The subject
line doesn't matter.

Andy,

Are you going to be adding anything to your faq about high speed and
ultra speed?

Hi,

How important is that logo? My Samsung CD-RW/DVD (OEM from Dell) is
48X/24X/48X, but doesn't have the Ultra Speed logo. I was able to burn a Ultra
Speed (16x-24x) RW.

Erasable media are forgetful and unreliable at best. Using the wrong
class of medium will produce higher error rates and even lower retention
and readability.

No kidding!

But the supposedly flaky, fragile, forgetful, unreliable cd-rw media was
good enough for BACKUP, of all things, even when combined with
supposedly flaky, fragile, faulty, unreliable packet "format", according
to none other than the Hit&Run Mikey:

You may back up ...to a DCD-formatted erasable.

Combining the flaky UDF fixed-length packets with
the tendency of erasables (particularly HS) to forget
is LETHAL for archiving.

Wonder why there aren't big warnings in DirectCD and Drag-to-Disc!
