View Full Version : Average rewrite and lifetime of Media
Andreas Mitsis

Anyone knows how many times I can write on normal CD-RW media? When will it
cause serious failures to do so and what is the average lifetime? Does this
depend on the manufacturer of the media in use? Where can I find
information about this online?
Thank you

No good answer to this. There are HS RW dics around that won't even write
twice. Currently the Ultra-speed (24x) verbatim media is very good. HS media
is notoriously poor and unreliable, but TDK and Sony have been good. Here
are some error-rate tests:
http://forum.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60316
high error-rates indicate a disc that is hard to read.

I'm finding commercial CD's (software, clipart) are going bad on me. I do take
good care of them. I'm now of the opinion that CD's, even CD-R's, aren't the
permanent medium they've been purported to be. Sure, I'll continue to use them,
but I have more confidence in additional hard drives, zip drives and floppies.
The best backups are photo prints and paper copies.

Lifetime and reliability of CD-RW depend on the brand/manufacturer, just
like with CD-R. But there doesn't seemed to be any fast and easy answer
to that question.
Some info here:
http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq02.html#S2-12
http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-5
(Note: Don't be surprised if the info in the cdr-faq is "quite dated"
and has "significant errors" [Mike Richter])
Excerpts from: http://www.verbatim.com/news/news2.cfm?art_id=47
The latest release of Orange Book Part III Volume 3
details the specifications for Ultra-Speed CDRW media.
Verbatim DataLifePlus 16x-24x CD-RW discs deliver more than 1,000
overwrites and an archival life of more than 30 years
Verbatim backs the quality of its complete line of DataLifePlus
media with a lifetime warranty.
Watch out for arguments along these lines:
"cd-rw is less reliable than cd-r, thus cd-rw is unreliable"
"cd-rw is the least reliable media, thus cd-rw is unreliable"
(There are many in these cdr groups who swear by the above.)

I've seen a Philips employee quote that poorly matched erasable media
with the drive it's in will have a rewrite lifetime of <10.

(As far as top or bottom posting, I usually follow what was done before. My
experience has shown that doing otherwise is a losing battle. (-: )
The CD burner drive is only a few months old. I'm SURE the DVD reader drive
needs cleaning (I have 5 cats). Dell told me that I should get a DVD cleaning
disk (the CD burner drive is also a DVD reader drive). I've never heard of
these before. Is there a better way to clean the drives? (Is this in your
FAQ's?)

I've never heard of a manufacturer recommending a cleaning disc; the
only one which seems to have a good reputation is the Panasonic, but I
have not looked for one myself.
The only recommendation I offer is to try blowing out the innards with
"canned air" applied carefully so the wand does not touch the optics.
Others have succeeded in disassembling the drive and cleaning with a
lint-free swab.

Thanks. I wouldn't try to disassemble it. Where are the optics located, top,
bottom, side?

When it blows, what exactly happens? I'm just curious here.
Usually a BSOD on start up that requires booting from the OS CD to use
the recovery options in the case of 2000, and sometimes an OS re-install
is required!

An essential omission for this Subject is the role of the leadout/runout in a reader. A CD-ROM (or audio) drive needs the runout to read the session at all. That's where about 10 MB go. If you only want to read the disc in a writer, don't close the session, save the space and find yourself a fraction of a cent richer.
Not in my experience. An audio disc without a leadout (produced by the
few
buffer underruns I've had) will read in ANY player up to the point where
the
data ends provided it was burned DAO. Failed data discs burned DAO will
behave similarly, any complete files will be readable in any reader.
