View Full Version : Can CD-RW coasters be fixed?

A little while ago for some reason my CD-RW drive was burning nothing
but bad discs. I don't know why this was happening and was afraid my
drive was pooping out on me, but I found out later that if erased and
reburned these CD-RW discs at 4X (my drive and discs are rated for
burning at 24X, High Speed) then I could have useable CD-RW discs
again. Ones that don't take forever for my DVD-ROM drive to mount and
search for data. I then remembered that I have other CD-RW discs I
considered coasters. Two of them are the same as the ones I described
above, 700MB/80 Minute High Speed Memorex brand. One was read in Nero
as a 0KB/0MB disc, not 703MB free like my other discs read. I tried
erasing that disc at 4X and all seemed to go well, but it still read
at 0KB/0MB. And I did refresh the reading. The other 700MB one only
reads as a regular 640MB CD-RW. And the third is a 650MB Verbatim
CD-RW That came with my first ever CD-RW drive that I don't think has
a prayer of being resurrected (since I took off the labeling with
rubbing alcohol to see if it still worked (it was bad anyway).

Anywho... The first two CD-RW discs: they went through a normal life
like any CD-RW disc until they were turned into coasters by unknown
forces of the X Dimension. The 650MB one... Ignore that one, I guess.
But can I bring back the first two (700MB ones) from unusability? And
can someone surprise me with info on the last one (the 650MB one)?

Yup. Doesn't work. It stops erasing without warning with a red icon.

When you feel you got nothing to lose:

Try exposing the bottom side of the cdrw to sunlight for about 30 min to
1 hour. Suggested this to one poster recently and the trick worked with
him.

Hey smh,
I don't believe it but it WORKED !! I verified that the cd-rw
was bad (spins drive and freezes machine) and then I put it in the sun
for 45 minutes. The drive now READS the cd-rw and I CAN write to it.
VERY COOL !!!

Note: Peter Van Hove (IsoBuster) warned not to put important data on
such recovered discs.

Hmmm... Yeah, I read that a little while back. I tried it but it didn't
work for me. Maybe I didn't wait long enough. Thanks.
