It says :
Subject: [7-16] Can you tell pressed CDs and silver CD-Rs apart?
(2000/03/12)
The easiest way is to drag something sharp across the top and watch what
happens. If you'd like to be able to use the disc afterward, there are
some non-destructive ways too.
-- end quote --
But it does not say how to interpret the results. I scratched the CD,
now what ? How does a pressed CD look ? And CD-R ?

David

I'm afraid the FAQ had its 'tongue' in its 'cheek'.
The easy way to tell is to drop the disc into a writer and to attempt to
read the ATIP. (Commands for that are usually called Disc Information or
something of the sort, depending on your mastering sofware.) With a
recordable disc - even after recording - there is information on the
capacity, and rated speeds (optional). A pressed disc has no ATIP.
Information on space used and on closure is in the TOC, of course.
