Hello

I am running FreeBSD 5.2 and while trying to burn a CD I got some strange
messages on my dmesg:

Mar 1 18:08:19 xxxxxxxxxxx kernel: ata1: resetting devices ..
Mar 1 18:08:19 xxxxxxxxxxx kernel: done
Mar 1 18:08:29 xxxxxxxxxxx kernel: ata1: resetting devices ..
Mar 1 18:08:29 xxxxxxxxxxx kernel: done
Mar 1 18:08:29 xxxxxxxxxxx kernel: acd0: FAILURE - MODE_SENSE_BIG timed out
Mar 1 18:08:59 xxxxxxxxxxx kernel: ata1: resetting devices ..
Mar 1 18:08:59 xxxxxxxxxxx kernel: done
Mar 1 18:08:59 xxxxxxxxxxx kernel: acd0: FAILURE - MODE_SELECT_BIG timed out
Mar 1 18:09:09 xxxxxxxxxxx kernel: acd0: FAILURE - TEST_UNIT_READY status=51<READY,DSC,ERROR> sensekey=MEDIUM ERROR error=0

While these messages appeared there was a strange grinding noise coming
from the drive. Ever since that happened I have been unable to read or
write any CD-Rs under any operating system (I have tried Windows XP and
FreeBSD) or while booting (from a CD). When inserting a CD I get the
same kind of grinding noises (except for a shorter time) and the disk
light stays on longer than it did before when inserting a CD. Eventually
the light will blink twice. They all think the CD is blank and give an
I/O error when trying to write. However I can still read prerecorded
CDs. Does anybody know what the problem is and how to fix it? I hope I
don't have a dead drive on my hands. The drive is a SONY CD-RW CRX300E.

Thanks

I have managed to get a replacement drive which should be arriving soon
so there is no need to respond to my query.
