Hello,

Is it safe to use Windex or any other glass cleaner to clean one's cds/dvds?
I've never been told it was, I've just assumed it would be OK. So I just
now figured I ought to find out for sure before I do any real damage to my
CD/DVDs.

So is it Safe or is it a No-No? And if it's a No-No, what would one suggest
instead?Isopropyl alcohol?

Thanks,

Jeff

I don't know Windex so I cannot comment on that product. Commercially
pressed discs can be cleaned with a mild detergent and water - then dried.
Copies are not always as waterproof, but can be cleaned with a damp
microfibre cloth. Don't use anything abrasive or harsh chemicals that might
harm the plastic.

And don't forget the usual recommendation to only wipe radially, i.e.
from the centre out, not around the circle.

Why are you cleaning them? Is it because there's some kind of deposit on
them or are they scratched? If there is some kind of deposit on them
then I'd try water first, possibly with a little detergent. If they are
scratched then a mild abrasive might help if you are careful. I've used
Brasso successfully to polish out scratches while others have reported
that toothpaste works. I'd practice on a free AOL CD or other scrap CD
before trying this on a treasured CD.

Cheers.

James.
