I have a burning program called "Record Now" by Sonic. In order to drag and
drop, I must format a cd disk with a packet writing process called "dla"
(drive letter access). It takes about 25 minutes to format a disk, and
can't be read in a standard cd drive..
1. Is there a process other than dla which might be quicker?
2. Is there a was to make my disks readable in other drives?
Thanks
Drew

Guessing (not as much fun as reading, but what the heck), you are
writing to an erasable. On that basis:
1. If you want to drag and drop, you need to format. If there's a speed
difference in formatting between dla and alternatives, it will be slight.
3. Your discs will be readable in other drives if they're in a modern
Windows environment with a suitable reader installed.
The above is brief because UDF and packet writing are explained at
length in the usual references: the CD-R FAQ and the primer at my WWW site.

Why are you commenting on DLA, Mikey?
I have used only DCD for packet writing
(...not use...not know...not write...)
I do not comment on what I don't know.

No. Formatting cd-rw takes time, just like formatting floppy or hard
disk takes time.

Win2k/xp systems should be able to read the discs without DLA
installed. For Win9x/ME, try installing this udf reader:

Isn't that obvious to a smarty ass like you?

Care to spit out the "modern" Windows?

How do I read DirectCD3 CD-RW disks in Windows XP? Windows XP claims they are empty and wants to open a session on them and overwrite everything
XP's UDF reader is new, different and
incompatible with the standard

My DLA never took more than minutes to full format any of my discs.
The most time one 8X disc took in my DVD drive was about 10 to 15 minutes,
after being rejected as either dirty, scratched, corrupt and unusable by INCD..
I use RecordNow Deluxe_v6, with the DVD Burning package.
BackupMyPc_v5, and DLA (drive letter access) ( suggestion: install both first ),
get integrated and absorbed by application parts of RecordNow Max Deluxe.
Using Lite-On 811s and Plextor 708a...and do everything with both,
same software on different computers; BE6 v1.0, and 815P.
Computer works smooth as silk now (no more blue screens, freezes, etc.).

Here's my tuppence worth:
I've used several packet writers, but not Record Now.
I no longer do and here's why:
1. They are invariably unstable and you end up losing data.
2. They can't be read on other machines without the same program
installed.
3. They are invariably unstable and you end up losing data.
4. They are slower to read and write than simply burning the data you
want to a multi session disk.
5. They tend to corrupt the disk and you end up losing data.
OH! Did I mention their tendency to trash your disk and destroy your
important data?
Do yourself a favor. Get a decent burning program (I like Nero, but
that is a personal choice) and use it to burn your files to CD. If you
include the time spent "formatting" the packet written disk, they are
at least as fast, any drive that will read multisession disks will
read them and they are much more stable. If you need to read them in
a really old (non-multisession) drive, simply close the disk and
you're good to go.

WRONG!....WRONG!....WRONG!!!!!!!!!!
I use BackupMyPc v5, DLA, both of which use RecordNowMax Deluxe v6.5
as a partial shell, all of which require Media Player v7 or better to work well.
I can use, view a disc, properly created in either of my PCs, in my wife's
3 year old Toshiba Satellite Notebook's CDrom, either as copied or drag/drop.
You just have to know the capabilities of Sonic's software, and how to use it.....
