View Full Version : CD-R can't make audio cds anymore

I have a problem with my Artec WRR-4848 CD writer. I have been using it for
about a year in a Pentium 200 MMX PC used for audio editing, and it has
worked fine (I know, its old junk, but the budget is nonexistant). I
recently replaced the motherboard, with another similar one, using the same
CPU. At the time, I checked and the CD-R read and wrote data CDs fine. I
assumed all was well. Yesterday, I tried extracting an audio CD wiith
Audiograbber, which I have been using for several years. I get a wave file
of the proper length, but it is totally silent. Looking at it in Cool Edit,
it is a flat line at zero.
If this wasn't bad enough, I tried to burn an audio CD from some wave files
I know to be good. I end up with a CD with the proper number of tracks, and
they play in an audio CD player (the seconds tick by until the end is
reached), but are silent.
For some reason audio CDs cannot be written or extracted anymore, although
the files are created, but are silent.
As I said, data CDs can be read and written just fine with the CD-R. Does
anyone have any idea what could cause this? I reinstalled Win 95, which made
no difference. Is there some reason a different motherboard could affect
transfer of audio CDs, but not harm data CDs? Makes no sense.
Thanks for your help.

After you replaced the motherboard, did you reconnect the audio cable
from the burner to the sound card?

Yes. It PLAYS audio CDs OK, just won't rip or burn audio CDs (or rather,
rips and burns them, but with totally sinent tracks).

Try CD Digital Player
http:\\homepage2.nifty.com/~maid/index_e.html
If it plays, that is, makes sound, then you need to disable Digital
Audio in both WMA and in CD Properties of Control Panel.
