Hi,

Im a newbie and i wondered how long CD-R lasts?. The longest i have
seen so far in shops in the UK are 90 minutes. I want to record stuff
onto a CD-R but i dont think i can fit it onto a 90 minute CD-R.

Is there any longer CD-R's available in the United Kingdom?.

Cheers,

Ben Smith

A CD-R (drive) should last for several years. A CD-R (blank disc) will
last on the shelf, unwritten for perhaps five years. Once written, a
write-once CD-R (disc) should last for decades. An erasable CD-R (disc),
depending on its rated speed, may last a few weeks to a year or so.

And that's why I ask people to specify what they mean when they talk
about "CD-R".

As for the question asked in the body of your post, there are blanks
rated up to 100 minutes. However, as the blank is overburned further -
and all blanks rated above 80 minutes must be overburned to reach that -
errors increase rapidly. Whether the high error rate for longer media is
acceptable to you depends on you.

Look for 99 min media like this:

Mike Richter (Slimy Friggin SOB) spewed: An erasable CD-R (disc), depending on its rated speed, may last a few weeks to a year or so.

That's based on the extensive testing that has no body of experience,
isn't that right, Mikey?

I have had extensive experience with erasable media.

the fragility of erasables means that I use them only for test,
so I don't have a body of experience to report.

Did Mikey coin the term "erasable"?

Up to 99 minute, but as well as the reliability issue....
The specification was originally 74 min
80 min takes the tolerances to the edge of limits
90 min and 99 min break the rules completely!

There is the writer compatibility issue..

Some writers will not support overburning at all - they cannot use
more than 80min at all.

Some will overburn, but not as far as 89:59

Some support 90 min CD-R to capacity, but no more

Some extend partially to 99 min

Some fully support 99 minute media

The issue of "OVERBURN" not straightforward, while the "80 plus" media
has an 80 minute code (for standards) so it requires overburn support,
it is not the same as overburning ordinary media.

90 and 99 minute media is desgned to have the extra capacity, by
breaking the standards for spiral pitch (tighter), velocity (slower)
and outer edge (wider) - it MUST break one or more of those standards.

It's not the "uncharted territory" that an overburn on ordinary media
is, where a poor error rate in what should be the leadout area would
not be considered to be a problem.
