After some troubles reading CDs burned on
another drive, I started looking at "higher quality"
options.

Could anyone explain the differences between
[pressed CDs] / duplicator CDs / and home-burned CDs ?

Is it worth it to get a [production burner], or can
a home CD burner do as good a job ?

Thanks

There is no difference between a replicated disc and one burned on a
computer drive. In each case, a good match of medium, drive and speed
will give a good disc; a poor combination will give one which is hard to
read and likely to fail.

A pressed disc (from duplication) is entirely different. It uses no dye
but instead has the pits and lands pressed into the plastic and made
visible through operation of the metallizing layer. This is discussed in
the usual references: the CD-R FAQ and the primer at my WWW site.

As for whether it's worth it, if I knew what a "production burner" was,
I would advise you to evaluate that for yourself. There are better and
poorer drives, many replicators rely on the SCSI interface (though that
is becoming less common), but essentially any well-made drive is a
"production burner" as far as I know. I use only Plexwriters for CDs
since I've found them both reliable and capable of giving outstanding
copies. I write no faster than 12x since I've found that 8-12x results
in perfect burns on my preferred media in those drives.

YMMV

Try burning at 16x or 24x on good media like Taiyo Yuden.

I think Mike may have his replicated and duplicated terms swapped in
this reply - around here replicated CD's mean pressed CD's and
duplicated CD's are CD-R's recorded on a CD recorder. I noticed that at
least one duplicator manufacturer is now using Plextor PX712 DVD drives.
I find 16X to give best results with the drive/media combination that I
normally use.

Cheers.

James.

It's a CYA (Cover Your Ass) thing found on vehicle specs about the
fuel economy a car might get. It has since migrated into net slang.
