View Full Version : Undreadable DVD-R in DVD players, why?

Hi,

I hope someone can explain the following, and maybe suggest a cure.

I have a "BTC external USB2.0 DVD +- R/RW writer" and I am using CDBurnerXP
Pro 3 Freeware (very good program!) for for burning data DVDs on "Traxdata
DVD-R (4x speed)" DVD disks. The disks have been burned and finalised in one
go. The contents is a simple folder strucure with some zip files, nothing
special.

The burning works just fine, but there is a problem in reading the DVDs on
anything but DVD-writers (I have tested on two different DVD-RW devices and
the disks reads ok there). On several DVD players (in a desktop and a
laptop) the disks are not recognised, and that sort of defeats the purpose.

The question is why can I not read the disks on standard "DVD-ROM" devices
(I hope this is the correct term), and is there anything I can do to ensure
my DVD-R disks become readable with such DVD-devices ?

Suggestions are most welcome.

You said you wrote DVD-R, but is there a chance you meant DVD+R? DVD-ROM
on + media can be anomalous; mine read well in the writer, but not in
the NEC reader. (DVD-R is fine in both.) I'm also guessing that you used
ISO 9660 format with reasonable filenames. (It's clear from your
description that the files are not too big.)

Hi Mike,

Many thanks for the answer. Clearly, the disks are DVD-R and not DVD+R.
Although I don't understand all the subtleties between those variants, I
understand there are some differences, and my best guess was to use DVD-R,
so I made sure that is what I bought and used. The disks are labeled DVD-R.
Still I have this problem of the disks becoming unreadable in DVD players.

The filenames are short and very simple, nothing special at all. Folder
names like "20041223" (i.e. a date) and file names like "k30023.zip". The
file sizes can be up to ~200MB though. I used "Joliet" as file format, it
was default. Not sure how that maps to ISO 9660 or if at all?

Someone else suggested I tried another burning program. So I tried the same
thing with Nero Express that came with the DVD burner (I didn't like the GUI
of Nero Express, it is less flexible than CDBurnerXP Pro). To my surprise,
it seems that DVD-R disks burned with Nero Express are indeed readable on
DVD players. So it may seem the problem is in the CDBurnerXP Pro software.
Does that sound reasonable? Somehow it surprises me, as I thought such
compatibility issues would be due to the burner and not the software?

What is going on here?

Sounds like some finalization problem. Recall reading a certain burner
does not finalize properly until fixed with a newer firmware. Also
possible CDBurnerXP does not finalize properly with the burner. Check
for a newer firmware or try another software.

You may also try the burn on DVD+RW which does not need finalization.

Sounds like you have extensive experience in DVD burning.

What do you mean by "trickier"?

Did burning to the + media require you to use a needle,
a magnifying glass and a cigarette lighter?

There are two versions of DVD-ROM you can write with Nero, usually
termed ISO and UDF. Whichever you used, try the other. UDF is relatively
new and may not be readable on some systems where ISO is standard.

That's the issue on file size as well: UDF can handle any size that will
fit on a DVD-ROM where ISO is limited. But the limit is far larger than
your file size, so you should have not problem with ISO.

Thanks for answering.

I have some experience with UDF on CD-writers (we are talking about "packet
writing", aren't we?) from a few years back, and that made me decide to stay
away from it (and programs like DirectCD). All sorts of unreadability
problems, inefficient use of CD etc. I find mastering CDs and DVDs is a
better approach for my needs. Or have these things changed now, can you do
DVD-mastering with UDF format?

I cannot see any reason why ISO should have problems. The file names are
short (would be ok in standard old fashioned DOS), and the file sizes aren't
that spectacular. As I mentioned, the disks burned with Nero Express did in
fact work, they were readable on the DVD players (same file structure). So
the problem must be in the CDBurnerXP program as far as I can tell. Maybe
some finalizing issue, it is a pity because CDBurnerXP was much more user
friendly than Nero Express.
