Is My CD-ROM Dead?

My Sony CRX225A-U CD-R/RW 52x24x52 has stopped reading discs, and am
wodering if it is dead or if there may be a fix.

It has been working perfect for one year (and 3 months, so I am past
warranty!), but after some heavy duty ripping it no longer reads discs
or even recognizes that one is in the tray.

When I put a disc in it goes through the motion of reading the disc,
but stops thinking it is empty. There is nothing else out of the
ordinary going on. I tried a diagnostic program(CheckIt), but without
being a able to read a disc it wont work. I am running on XP Service
Pack 2 and the device manager tells me it is OK.

Did I fry this this drive by running it too hard? Anything I can do to
fix it?
