Philips DVD8421 Cannot Recognize Blank Media

Hi there,

I have a relatively new HP machine (Windows XP SP2) with a Philips
DVD8421 DVD+R/RW burner. When I attempt to burn to CDR or CDRW using
Nero, Sonic RecordNow, or iTunes, I'm asked to insert a blank disc,
even though I'm certain the disc in the drive is blank.

I have reinstalled the drivers to no avail. Any possible ideas as to
why this error is occuring?

What drivers are you installing? Don't think winxp needs any drivers
for the drive. I would first try removing the drive in the Device
Manager, reboot and let winxp rediscover the drive. Then disable winxp
built-in IMAPI:

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, double-click "IMAPI CD
Burning", click Stop, then set "Startup type" as "Disabled".

If still trouble, there might be conflicts between
Nero/RecordNow/iTunes. Try installing only one of these and see if
problem disappears.

Since DVD and CD lasers are different, it's possible that you have a
failed component on the CD side or simply dust/dirt on that side of the
optics. If it never read CDs (I assume that it doesn't - but it would
help if you told us), then those are less likely.
