SONY CRX700E not detected.

Running XP SP2 on IBM Thinkpad X20 with this SONY cd burner, not yet 2 years
old and not heavily used. Suddenly the drive does not appear in explorer
and Device Manager shows the dreaded yellow ! . First error message says
driver is corrupted or missing. When I uninstall then reinstall, the
message says hardware error occurred during installation.

I turned the computer off, removed the drive from the bay, reinserted and
started -- same results. Then I replaced the drive with the DVD and have
exactly the same results. So I assume the problem is not the hardware - but
what is? I recently found 2 Trojan horses -- PSW Bispy A and B and
Downloader Stubby
A but I don't think they had been there long since AVG scans frequently and
then I got rid of them. Just in case culprits like that might cause this

Perhaps generate BOOTLOG.TXT to see what are being loaded?
