Blank DVD media shows as a CD Audio in "My Computer" ??

I just installed a LG GSA-4163b DVD (fw A101) burner in my Win98SE system,
which is also equipped with a Lite-On LTD-166S DVD-ROM (fw DS18).

I noted that every time I put a blank DVD+R or DVD+RW disk in the burner, my
"Audio CD" program fires. (Since I don't have -R or -RW disks here, I
can't tell if this applies to those media too).

Opening "My Computer" show the drive contents as an audio CD, with a total
size of 1.99Gb. If I explore the drive, I can see one file: Track01.CDA,
1Kb, date stamped 1995-01-01. Unsurprisingly, if I try to play this file,
WMP gives me an error.

Putting the same disks in my DVD-ROM shows nothing, as expected.


Can someboby explain me why blank disks put in the burner are seen that way
? Is there any way to correct this ?

Thanks for your suggestion. I thought about it but before proceeding I'm
worring about this warning posted on LG download page for this firmware:

"This firmware update is for drives with original firmware versions below
A101. The drives must be original LG branded drives with the DVD Writer
model number GSA-4163B(no OEM units). "

"versions below A101" --> I'm at A101, not below.. Should I care ?

"no OEM units" --> The unit I have is a "bulk" unit (not a boxed retail
version). It was sold in the store as "OEM", but the logo appearing on the
label and on the faceplate is LG, not another manufacturer name. Does it
then qualifiy as an OEM or genuine LG ?

I upgraded my firmware to A102, but, unfortunately, it didn't change the way
it handles blank disks.

I also had the opportunity to try a DVD-R blank, but it does the same as a
DVD+R.


OTOH, I booted my machine in Windows XP, and it correctly handles blank
disks. Oddly enough, the LG burner shows as a CD-ROM in "My Computer" while
the Lite-On correctly shows as a DVD-ROM.


Any other ideas ?

Have you checked the BIOS and see if the LG is recognized correctly?

Well...

I made sure I had the latest BIOS for my motherboard (ASUS P4PE - Award
1007). It correctly detects the drive as a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B. PIO
Mode 4, UDMA 2

The CD-ROM / DVD-RAM id display seems to depend on wether there is a blank
disk in the drive or if it is empty (see below).

In summary:

In XP:
- when the drive is EMPTY, it displays "DVD-RAM" in "My Computer" (DVD for
the Lite-On)
- when there is a blank disk in it, it shows "CD-ROM", total size 0 bytes,
free size 0 bytes, and I can «explore» the disk (the Lite On takes forever
to mount the disk and ask to insert a disk if you try to explore it)
- when there is a non empty DVD media, it correctly reports the correct
Volume label, a realistic total size, etc.. (same for the Lite-On)

In Win98:
- when the drive is EMPTY, it displays "CD-ROM" in my computer (the Lite-On
does the same)
- when there is a blank disk in it, it shows "Audio CD" as volume label,
"CD-ROM", total size 1.99Gb, free space 0 bytes, and I can Explore the disk
where I can see the 1kb Track01.CDA file (the Lite On shows nothing in the
drive, trying to explore it generates a "Device not ready" error)
- when there is a non empty DVD data media, it correctly reports the Volume
label, "CD-ROM", total size 1.99Gb, free space 0 bytes (the Lite on does the
same) EXCEPT if the disk is a commercial DVD Video: in that occurence the
total size is correctly reported (3.69Gb).


Just to add to the headache, I can say that I also tested both drives with
the 3 different media in two Virtual PC machines (one Win98, the other
WinXP) and that I got another strange result : only the commercial
DVD-Video disk could be read on both the LG and the Lite-On. In all other
instances, the LG reported the drive as "not ready", while the Lite-On could
at least read the DVD-Data disk.

Go figure.....

Can you tell me if the 1.99Gb total size "limit" observed in Win98 for disks
other than DVD-Video is at least consistent with other brand drives ?

(2G is FAT16's limit.)

According to these you may say the problem is "normal". Must be a
limitation of CDFS.VXD.

My old Win98SE pc shows blank DVD-R's (Pioneer 104) as having 1 .cda
track on them in Windows Explorer - don't know why. Anyway I can burn
them with Prassi on Nero with no problem, then they become normal data
or video DVDs
