View Full Version : Could not write -R DVD

Hi,
I have TOSHIBA ODD-DVD SD-R6252 (DVD/CD-RW).
I believe that it is a -R DVD burner so I baught DVD-R format (Platinum
8x DVDs, one time writeable)but I am not able to burn my DVDs using
Nero,Sonic Record now (Which came with Laptop), or using direct writing
functionality of WINDOW XP.
When I am using Sonic Record now or Nero I am getting the message
saying to insert a blank +R/+RW DVDs and direct writing is asking me to
insert a Blank or RW cd , error messsage :"Disk in the drive is not a
writeable CD or it is full".
I tried by
1. Removing Nero and record now and installing only record now again.
2. Removing the device.(System automatically installs the device and
driver after next reboot).
But it does not help either.
Can any body help me in resolving my problem.
I am really upset ..
Thanks.

Think that's a "+" only burner. Run Nero InfoTool for certain.
Also Winxp built-in burn function does not support DVD.

The information I see in a quick scan implies that your drive does *not*
write DVD-R(W); you need DVD+R or DVD+RW.
Removing Nero is not enough. You appear to have installed InCD (Nero's
companion packet-writing program from Ahead) and to be using it to
format discs. You should only format when you want to use packet
writing; with InCD, that means for erasable (RW) media only and then
only if you really want fixed-length packets.
While formatted, a disc cannot be mastered. Since formatting with InCD
applies only to erasables, you can make a formatted disc available for
mastering by erasing it.
So your solution is to go with the media the drive writes - which is
what the program is telling you. Fortunately, DVD+R is as usable,
available and economical as DVD-R; its only disadvantage is a problem
with DVD-ROM not being recognized in some readers unless a particular
bit is set.

Hi ,
Thanks to both of you for quick response and help.
I got the following information on a site which says :
Toshiba SD-R6252 firmware 1A14 description
Write media CD-R/RW, DVD+R/+RW
Max Write Speed CD-R 16x (Z-CLV?)
Max Write Speed CD-RW 10x (CLV)
Max Write Speed CD-RW HS
Max Write Speed DVD+R 2.4x (CLV)
Max Write Speed DVD+RW 2.4x (CLV)
Read Media CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, DVD-ROM, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW
Max Read Speed CD, CD-R 24x (CAV)
Max Read Speed CD-RW 24x (CAV)
Max Read Speed DVD, DVD+RW 8x (CAV)
Random Access Time CD 95 ms?
Random Access Time DVD 105 ms?
Internal Buffer 2 MB
Connection Type ATAPI/E-IDE
Software DVD-Video Playback tbd
Software DVD-Video Creation tbd
Software Packet Writing tbd
Software General CD/DVD Recording tbd
Remarks Slim type drive.
So it seems that my drive does not recognise -R media.
And I checked the properties its +R/RW.
But here again what compaq site says is:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/hpcpqnk/us/download/22185.html
Toshiba SD-R6252 DVD+RW Drive Firmware Upgrade
version 1A14 1.00 (21 Oct 04)
» revision history
US (Global) (SP28709.exe - 678.2 KB)
This package contains a firmware upgrade for the Toshiba SD-R6252
DVD+RW Drive for the listed notebook models.
software information
Fixes
Fixes an iTunes specification-compliance issue regarding status
reporting of DVD+R media.
Fixes issue where the drive did not mount MKM 4X DVD-RW media.
Enhancements
Adds enhanced support for reading/writing to DVD+R media that was
previously unrecognized by the drive.
Adds support for writing to media rated up to 8X.
Adds DVD-RW media support.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I updated with this firmware but it is also helpless.
It seems that with this firm ware it should be able to recognize -R/RW
DVD.
Perhaps this DVD drive does not like Platinum DVD -R discs...
Thanks again.

The Fixes and Enhancements refer to "reading" DVD-RW, not writing.

Sounds like you have extensive experience in DVD burning.
What do you mean by "trickier"?
Did burning to the + media require you to use a needle,
a magnifying glass and a cigarette lighter?

Hello Mike:
Appreciate the above information very much, as I am just beginning now
with burning capable drives. In my case, the drives in a DELL XPS
Gen 4 with XP Pro and Windows Media Center are:
Phillips DVD+-RW, DVD8631
and
HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM, GDR8163B
My question is: Can you verify for me that DVD+RW media does not
allow for multiple sessions?
When using SONIC's RECORD NOW I am unable to add additional files to
the DVD+RW media. I have just about given up on SONIC software, but
have yet to tryout SONIC's MY DVDlite. However, I have just
discovered the Windows Movie Maker program, and have begun playing
with that for production of home video and slidshow presentations.
Also, I have been trying to use SONIC's DLA with MEMOREX DVD+RW media,
but unsuccessful. Keeps changing from a FULL disc to an almost empty
disc. If I understand correctly, DLA is the SONIC's version of NERO's
InCD packet writer ?
Another question: Would you recommend DVD-R media rather than DVD+R
media?
At present time, I have a stack of TDK CD-Rs, and a pkg of 3
DVD+RW media, but will eventually want to get some DVD R media .
Regards,
~ Vince ~

I tried that, but it won't let me. I can add files to the project, but when I try to burn it, it says "Please insert a blank disc" and refuses to use the DVD+RW. Plextor tech support tells me that they ARE able to add files in the exact same situation. I asked them what software are you using? They said EZCDDVD Creator Classic, just like me. I asked what version? They replied 6.2.0.134 SP2. I have 6.1.1.7, which is the latest update that Roxio has posted on their Web site. So thank you, Roxio, for not posting updates to your bug filled software.
