Dell 48X CD-RW/DVD ROM Combo drive trouble

Has anyone experienced trouble with this drive (HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481-B)
(number from hardware device manager, I believe it's a Hitachi/LG) reading
high speed CD-RW media? I
tried burning 24X CD-RW Memorex media on a backup job and got drive errors
referring to damaged media. Could reload the same disk and it would burn.
Hit or miss. Had problems accessing these disks, too, to format and/or
erase. After format, sometimes couldn't access the disk.
Doesn't happen with CD-R 48X media, nor 12X CD-RW media.

Comments or experiences? Dell CSR's are completely clueless of course and
of no help. One asked me what I needed the high speed disks for. I told
him to back up my hard drive. He then actually asked me why I wanted to do
that!?!?!?

There were reports of problems with Memorex cd-rw. DirectCD especially
