I am trying to transfer files from an old Compaq (Win98) to a new HP
(XP). I've established an ethernet concection using a crossover cable.
The connection seems to work, I have green lights at both ports. As
far as I can tell they are both set up for file sharing (new one is,
old one appears to be) However, neither computer appears to see the
other, and I can't figure out how to fix this. Any help would be most
welcome. TIA.

By default, Win9x uses the workgroup "WORKGROUP" but 2k/XP use "MSHOME"

This would cause both PCs to see themselves, but not the other, even though
they can be ping'd.

If for some reason, changing the workgroup (best to change 9x to MSHOME, as
that will be the more standard workgroup name for attaching PCs in the
future) to MSHOME doesn't help, then from the Win98 PC, go:

start > run > winipcfg

note the IP address

from Win XP PC, go:

start > run > \\(IP Address of Win98 PC)\

So, if Win98 is 192.168.0.1, then from XP you type \\192.168.0.1\ that
should work even through the different workgroups, if you dont feel like
changing workgroups for one reason or another.
