I'm going to set up a wireless network
can I do it without buying an access point or router
can I just do it by plugging in a PCI card into my desktop and create a link
with my laptop which has a built in wireless
the product I am planning to buy is a Netgear HA311 PCI card
my laptop has a built in 802.11a(b) dual antenna

You can certainly cobble together a two-node peer-to-peer wireless lan in the
manner which you describe.

Now, did you want either one of those systems to be able to connect to the
internet? How 'bout the other system?

My desktop has a USB cable modem (as well as an Ethernet slot) which
connects to the net my computer will have to be on since the card is in the
computer. I know an access point is better but where I live in Australia the
cost at least $500 and I don't even know if they will work or If I'll need a
router

do you know any 802.11a access points or routers and PCIcards
my network is a small one they wouldn't be more than 5 computers currently
only 1 or 2 when I set it up

Yes, I use Netgear HA501 802.11a cardbus nics with a Netgear HE102 WAP, which
in turn is connected to a router port. Works great, drivers work fine on both
Win2K and XP Pro, zero complaints about the entire kit...
