Cat5 environment

I know technically Cat5 cable is for internal use, but can anyone see any
_real_ problems running a cable out through a wall, 6 feet up the wall,
secured by normal cable clips, and then back in through the wall?

I'm sure that there are any number of theoretical environmental arguments
againsts (lightning, cold causing breakdown), some might claim it's a
security risk (like someone will tap on to the side of my house!), but lets
face it these are minimal.

If it's good enough for telephone cable, I see no reason why the insulation
on should be any difference (and yes, I know they are different, but
they are still both basically PVC over twisted copper).

Any thoughts?

(and please don't suggest wireless.....yes, I know it's the way to do it,
but it's not for me, and a single twisted network cable is much cheaper!!)

Aside from the normal paranoia issues you've mentioned, I'd keep an eye on how
well it weathers from UV exposure. I doubt even plenum-grade cat5e has much
protection from UV, so eventually the outer jacket is going to break down and
allow moisture to seep in with inevitable results.

But it won't kill anyone in a hurry, that's for sure ;-)

I'd just protect it with some weather taping if you plan on keeping this
setup for a long period of time.

In my experience, the jacket on plenum rated cable is even less tolerable to
environmental issues than standard cable. I particularly notice the jacket
cracking in low temperatures. I live in a fairly warm too, so my definition
of cold is much warmer than most peoples.
