View Full Version : accessing linksys wireless router

I am running WinXP professional.
I purchased a Linksys wireless router, 4 port. I connect to the web
via a satellite modem.
My deskttop computer is connected to the router via CAD5 into standard
network card.
When everything was turned on, the router functions, i.e. I connect to
the internet.
However, I am unable to access the router via its address, the
standard 192.168.1.1 to change the security settings.
Under ipconfig, my desktop sees the router, I can ping the router or
other net addresses without errors.
When I type in the above address, I get the error message.....cannot
connect to server.
I put in the included CDROM and let it run its automatic setup, but
the install program said it cannot access the internet, at the same
time I received a popup that I had new email.
Two friends, both certified network administrators, came over with
their laptop running Win2000. Plugged the laptop into the router via
CAD5 wire into one of the ports, and was able to access the router at
the above address. The security settings were changed from default.
I had previous tried resetting the router, without any change in the
above problem.
I have not tried the wireless part of the setup.
I need help-does anyone have any thoughts why my desktop cannot access
the router?

Now did your desktop have a hard-coded IP address? If it does, then I'd
suggest removing it, and letting it pick up its own IP address.

Why can't the linksys router handle a fixed IP? It's in the config.

You are correct. That was a bit of a non sequitur...

The reason I asked is because I tried to config the linksys 54G wifi
router with a fixed IP configured, and it didn't work. It is as if
they never tested it with DHCP disabled.

Well, I was asking just in case your PC had its IP fixed to its external IP
address, such as the one that the ISP assigns to you.

The router would be pretty bored (well, lost, actually) if he did that ;-)
