View Full Version : New Router - Old PC cards
I have an old wired network using a:
Netgear DS104 hub and 2 netgear FA310TX PC cards and a DSL modem.
card specs: http://shop.cyberstorage.com/product_info.php?products_id=314
I've just ordered a:
Netgear Wireless Bundle - WGR614 Router AND WG511 Wireless PC card (so that
I can get my laptop in the 'loop'.)
router specs: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10342463&loc=14683
Question:
Can I use the old FA310TX PC cards (in the 2 desktops) with the new WGR614
Router??
-----
I've also read that I will not need the hub anymore and that I also won't
need any of the "internet connection software" anymore. IE: WinPoet, Zone
Alarm, and whatever else is there?
Question:
What should I uninstall/delete and in what order? (before or after new
wireless install?)
Or should I just disable?
anything else?
I useWin98se.
Thanks for any help or advice.

Of course! Most wireless routers also include a wired component to it. In
fact, you'll find that the wired component of your router is superior to
your old hub, because the new one acts like a switch. A switch is a more
sophisticated hub that intelligently optimizes traffic between PCs and the
Internet.
I've also read that I will not need the hub anymore and that I also won't need any of the "internet connection software" anymore. IE: WinPoet, Zone Alarm, and whatever else is there?
Yes, your new router will act as your firewall (ZoneAlarm) as well as your
PPPoE client (WinPoet).
I would keep the ZoneAlarm enabled though, even with the new router in
place. ZoneAlarm really doesn't take up too much in the way of resources,
and it's always nice to have it already setup and active just in case you
ever need to connect up one of your machines directly to the DSL modem for
whatever reasons. Plus while ZoneAlarm is active, even if it is behind
another firewall, it can be protecting your machines from each other. You
never know if someday a Trojan gets into one of your PCs, so having the
ZoneAlarm protecting your other machines means that your whole network isn't
owned.
Question: What should I uninstall/delete and in what order? (before or after new wireless install?) Or should I just disable? anything else?
I wouldn't uninstall anything until after you've installed the new router.
I'd then uninstall the WinPoet, and that's it.
I useWin98se.
If you were using at least Win2000 then you wouldn't have needed WinPoet,
PPPoE features were built into Windows as of Windows 2000 and XP.
