Ethernet to USB (NOT USB to Ethernet), does it exist?

I've got an old computer (so old it's gotta run W95) with no USB, but I do
have a working Ethernet card for it. I'm wondering if Ethernet to USB is
possible. Every adapter I've ever seen is the other way around (USB to
Ethernet). Am I S.O.L.?

No, you're not SOL necessarily. You can always purchase a USB-providing
PCI plugin card. I assume that it's at least got an extra PCI slot
available? Some of these USB cards will also feature a Firewire port so
you can get them both in the one card.

But win95 doesn't support USB, IIRC. Even more unlikely that it would
support any e'net->USB arrangement assuming the OP could even find one
(unlikely IMO - what would be the use of it?)

If he really needs USB (& he doesn't say what the actual problem is),
I'd suggest the OP buy a 2nd-hand m/c with win98SE if money's tight.

I'm thinking for an old laptop actually.
I knew way back they had PCI USB cards, so I'm covered on an old PC I've
got. Now if I could just get a faster AT motherboard for it.
I wonder what was the fastest made before cursed ATX..

I know there used to be some USB-providing PCCards available at one
time. But it's doubtful if its still available nowadays.

BTW, as another poster has pointed out, Win95 didn't support USB, how do
you expect to get this thing to work even if you could find the cards?

There are some Ethernet print servers that have a USB port. Also there
are network disk drives with USB ports. The ports are made for printers
or drives. I have no clue if they could be used for something else or
what you want the USB for.

The first release of windows 95 does not. win 95 OSR2 does but
poorly.

As you suggest, windows 98 is the first MS OS with decent USB support.
If money is really really tight he could switch to '98 on the same
machine but carefully i.e. fresh install preferrable '98 not '98se
using 98lite and maybe avoiding IE 4x or above (all for performance
considerations for such a weak PC)
