mix 'n match wiFi

This is a general and perhaps stupid question so my apologies in
advance. I am new to wireless.

Let's say, for example, I want to make a 54g wireless network with a
54g wireless router and several 54g wireless cards. Do all of these
have to be from the same manufacturer? Are there any compatibility
issues I should be aware of like incompatibility with some security
features over and above basic connectivity if using products from
different manufacturers or among certain models?

My gut tells me all these products should be compatible by complying
with the wireless standard, but I was wondering if there were any war
stories or caveats re this issue you'd like to share with the group -
or maybe tell me that I am imagining and potential of problem.

Most if not all of the Wireless-G kits have proprietary "turbo" modes that
boost throughput vs ieee standard wifi. If you want to enable such features
they'll likely only work between nics and routers from the same company,
otherwise you're "stuck" at the ieee throughput...

Good point. I wanted to make sure there weren't any other significant
issues. I'm glad that seems to be the extent of proprietary issues.
