Hi all,
a little question.
I can buy a 17"Sony (model N4006) or a 17"Philips (model N4001) from a
NeXT-hardware vendor.
So... which model is better for a NeXTStation Color Turbo?
Thanks!

The Sony monitor uses a Trinitron tube, so if you like those it may be
a good choice. Some can't stand them, in which case the Philips may be
preferable.

I also believe that the N4006s are more reliable. I've had 4 or 5 of
the N4001s from several different sources, and all have had some sort
of problem (either the tube has died or the power switch has been
faulty). Both of the N4006s I have now still work fine. Could just
be luck though.
I've now seen every model of NeXT monitor, and I'd rather use the
N4006 than any other (even than any of the 21" models). Then again,
every display device I often use from TV down to 17" monitor is a
Trinitron, so I'm a little biased :)

One of the sony ones I have did die on me, just clicked off like
the power was cut. Took me forever to find someone willing to work
on it. The NeXT label scared everyone away. When I found a place
that was willing, he opened it up and said that he didn't understand why
nobody else would work on it because it was almost the same as any
other sony monitor he had worked on. That said, it was the first one
of that type he had delt with, so once it was working right (with the
slab) he recorded all the specifics in case he saw another one.

The 17" sony is sharper than the 21". I tend to go back and forth
with which one I use. It's a toss up, size or sharpness.

Good to have additional data points on this -- of course it is
possible that I've just had a few bad N4001s. Certainly the power
switch on them, though, isn't very well designed. One reason the
N4006 might be easy to get fixed is that it is almost identical to the
Sun 1662 (IIRC) monitors. Fixed frequency might be different and the
color is of course a switch, but other than that it looks the same.
Heh. The only thing I've seen wrong with any of the 21"s that I've
seen (N4005, N4005A, and the early non-numbered one with BNC) is that
the bases aren't quite up to the task. On a few of them that I've
seen the base is cracked in the same spot, probably just due to the
weight. They seem to be otherwise durable though -- one I have was
dropped on its upper corner at least once (case is broken), and it
still functions.

Indeed. For now, the monitor that I *actually* use most of the time
with my primary NeXT is an IBM P275 black, which is a 21" Trinitron
that goes up to 2048x1536@60hz (though not with the NeXT, of course
;). I actually find that it matches a NeXTstation cosmetically better
than any of the original color monitors, and of course the picture is
fantastic.

Ahh--but that is what makes viewing photos or video on the 21" with an
ND such a pleasure.
