Can I hook a mono monitor up to a colorstation just to test if the slab
boots okay? Is there a risk of harming either the monitor or the slab?

No, not with out hardware modifications. You wouldn't even be able to
plug them in together due to completely different monitor cabling.
The mono monitor has a built in keyboard and sound interface, and it
also receives power directly from the same cable. The color monitor is
just a regular 13w3 SOG (sync-on-green) monitor, and requires a y-cable
with a soundbox for the keyboard and sound interface.

If you have the Y-cable you might be able to plug a mono monitor in where
the sound box would normally go and at least turn the thing on. I've never
tried it, though.
