View Full Version : Disabling the CRT of an N4000A

Hello.
I wonder whether it is possible to disable the CRT of an N4000A B/W
monitor. I have some plans with my NeXTstation, which involve quite a
bit compile time. The CRT is still crisp and bright, which I'm told
is not a very usual state for these beasts, so I'm a bit reluctant
to leave it on for a long period of time when there's absolutely no
need. So I was thinking of adding a small on/off switch to turn off the
CRT (And only the CRT), leaving the "soundbox module" as is.
A while ago, somebody posted a pinout of the internal header of this
soundbox board:
connector J8 (as seen from top): 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 |_ _| 1,2 +12V 3 GND 4,5 -12V 6 HSYNC 7 GND 8 VSYNC 9 GND
I suppose a double throw switch on the 12V and -12V would do just fine to
turn off the CRT, but will the rest of the circuitry respond nicely to
this, or do I need to add a dummy load? Will the parasitic load on the
HSYNC, VSYNC and video signals be a problem?
Kind regards,
Martijn

Do you need to switch the monitor on and off without rebooting? It
might be easier to just buy a sound box.

NeXT stuff isn't easy to come by over here in the Netherlands :(

Fair enough. However, a sound box is small and shipping from elsewhere
might not be too expensive.
