A coworkers father recently puchased a next cube at a yard sale for $1
including keyboard and monitor. He thought he was buying a game cube.
I've plugged it in and the screen comes up as "testing hardware" but it
has been doing that for quite awhile now. Is this normal?

Once the computer boots up what do I do? I've never seen the Next OS.
What is it called btw? Just Next?

Also, this came with no mouse. Do I need a special one or can some
generic work?

Thanks for any info.

Dave

Doesn't sound good... Can you press Command-` (the key on the
upper left of the numeric keypad) and get to the ROM monitor?

NeXTSTEP, with various capitalisations.

With the correct adapter you can use a Logitech bus mouse but
that's about it.

CMIAW, but wasn't the non-adb mouse just a "plain quadrature" mouse? In
that case, an Amiga or Atari mouse (for example) could easily be converted,
and a non-optical PC mouse shouldn't be *too* hard to convert, given a
bit of soldering skills.

True. I was thinking of ready-made solutions.

You're right, and come to think of it, I did once build an adapter to
use an Amiga mouse on my cube. Wow that was years ago...

No dice on command-`, the very first thing that comes up is that
"testing system" screen and it just stays there forever. I think I'm
going to try to open the case and clean out whatever crap is in there.
Apparently it sat in a barn for awhile. The outside of the case is
pretty bad, the inside could be worse.

If I can't get it to work I might gut it and install an imac motherboard
inside if it will fit. It would make a very cool looking OSX computer.

If you plan to destroy the cube, I'm interested for video cable &
motherboard.

or if you fancy a go at some flavour of *nix/Linux, you can hack a
mini-ATX board into most next boxen with a little creativity

Heh, a cube running Linux + GNUstep would be an interesting showpiece...
