We had a logo designed several years ago, complete with stationery and
business cards. We have lost the original files, but printer has them. I
need now to make a couple of changes, but I do not have the font (Optima
and Optima Bold). What is the protocol for designers regarding the font
used in design work we paid handsomely for. If I found the company's
name that designed all of this, could I request a copy of the font from
them--in other words, is that part of the deal normally? Thanks for any
help.

It would depend. If it was an unusual type that the designer had to buy, it may
belong to the company, but probably not. Would depend on what was specified in
the contract.
The designer would either embed the type or outline it so that the font
wouldn't have to be sent.
Optima is a common font.
You can purchase Optima from Linotype for $21 for each face (regular and bold
are two separate faces and you'll need both for Illustrator, since it doesn't
do fake bold.).

I have it for the Mac. With fonts I have little issues, so
give me a mail if you can use it.

Donna,

Legally speaking, you are not entitled to a copy of the font from the
designer because it is not the designers to sell. A font is considered as
software and individual licenses must be purchased.
To ask for a copy of the font is like asking for a copy of Illustrator - or
whatever software was used to design the logo.
Also, generally speaking, designers retain ownership of artwork and their
clients (you) are only granted unlimited use.
In my work I do a lot of output for designers, as well as companies (and who
ever else has money). They are requested to provide all artwork, including
fonts, that we require for output. Once we have output that job we must (&
do) delete all fonts from our system - because to keep them would be illegal
& would leave us open to penalties. You want a font, you must buy it for
your own use.
However; I'm surprised that the designer wouldn't have provided you with a
CD containing your logo/artwork. This would have included what ever you
require to output, including colour specifications, fonts etc. You should
request this from the designer. Whether you decide to use that font for
ongoing use is largely up to your own ethics. Failing that, the font is
common & easily purchased.

Keith.
