View Full Version : Alignments: which is the master object?

Suppose I select N objects in order, starting from object n = 1 to
object n = N and then do an alignment. Do all the objects align on the
1-th object or the N-th object? (or something else?)

Experimentally, it seems to be the N-th object (although I only did one
test, of vertical alignment, and thinking back, my test could also have
indicated that all the objects aligned on the _lowest_ object).

I guess another question is, why doesn't the discussion of Alignment on
page 129 of the Illustrator 9.0 manual say anything about this?

There are two ways to determine what object the others align to.
1. Select all the objects you want to align. Everything will align to the one
that's closest to the direction you're going. e.g. you want everything to align
to the right. All the objects will align to the one that's the farthest to the
right.
2. Select ALL the objects you want to align. Let go of shift if you used that
to select all objects. Now, click on the selected object you want all the
others to align to (your "master" object). All the objects should stay
selected. Click the align button you want.

This works with AI9 and 10. Not sure about earlier versions.

If you align to the vertical/horizontal then it centres them the position
from the furthest objects.
