Hello there,

Total newbie here -- I had a designer build a site for me and then she moved away so I am trying to alter a few aspects of the site - mainly a few small jpg files. Basically, I have a block of color with some dead text on it. I use Illustrator 8.0 to fill in the color and put new text in. I then export the file to .jpg and place it back in the dir of the web site.

The problem is that the color around the text looks really blurry/grainy. I tried some different settings during the .jpg export but they did not make a difference or made it worse. Here is the link: http://www.missionmeetings.com/ The "next event" .jpg is what I am referring to.

Can anyone suggest what I may be doing wrong or how to correct these
aberrations?

Thank you.

Export as GIFs, not JPGs.

Yes, GIFs are what you want to use for images with clean, sharp areas of
color, JPGs are for more blended things like photographs or graphics with
gradients and shadows and such like. (there are exceptions, of course) You
will also have to change the code in the html so the images are
suchandsuch.gif instead of suchandsuch.jpg

I'll pipe in to agree with Luna and Farlo - GIFs would have been a better
choice of format for these.

For that, like everyone said, use GIFs, though if you need to use JPEG, you
need to up the quality settings. At least 6 to 8.

without a lot of red to look good. yeah, I've noticed Red gets blown out in JPGs a lot ... White seems to be
an issue with JPGs, too. I've seen "white" JPGs on top of a White background (GIF or hex color) and the JPG always has a pink tinge to it (to me).

Areas with very gradual changes in color can be bad in JPEG. I've seen a
lot of blocking and mosquito noise problems with bright blue skies in
photos. You really do have to play around with quality settings. On
occaision I'll jump back and forth between Photoshop and FireworksMX to get
the best results in quality versus file size.

Overall, just to chime in, GIF is indeed the best choice by far for
compressing graphics with solid areas of color. The GIF compression engine
is far more efficient at compressing such items than JPEG could ever hope to
do.

For instance, I have a Pat Nagel "Rio" image that I digitized in vector form
(just for my own personal fun and admiration of the fellow's precise work),
based on a 1200ppi scan from his book. I created a 1600 X 1200 wallpaper
GIF image that is under 60K in file size. A JPEG of comparable quality came
out to more than 6 times that size (over 360K). Of course, for an
additional option, one could save graphical stuff in Flash SWF format for
potentially even bigger file savings over GIF. The same Nagel artwork comes
out around 20K in Flash.

Export it as a gif and try to reduce the colour palete to two colours only
for size optimisation *text and backgrounds colours only*.

I seen the other pages of your site: I suggest you to make some modification
with the text leading to improve legibility.

Have a nice weekend
