View Full Version : Strange message on AI 10 distribute centers

Folks:

Got about 8 files open in AI 10 Mac (MacOS 10.2.x), editing away...now I
gotta distribute three text objects evenly in one of the files. OK, I know
how to do that, select the objects and hit the "vertical center distribute"
button on the distribute objects portion of the "align" palette."

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzt.

Instead of aligning, AI complains, obscurely,

"Please choose a key object by clicking on one of the selected
objects(s) with the selection tool, or set the spacing value to Auto."

This applies to text objects? No, same message appears if I try to
distribute-align three plain rectangles. I can't seem to do anything with
the selection tool that makes any difference.

Experience has made me cynical: I exited, saving everything, and restarted.
Now the same three rectangles and the same operation works without
complaint.

I checked around on this group and in the AI help. Nothing jumped out, so
maybe I simply used the wrong search incantation -- easy to do.

Probably I accidentally hit some keyboard combo that changed an obscure
parameter from "auto" for the rest of the session. Restart, and it's back
to "auto". But what is that parameter? Have I lurched into the Twilight
Zone, or what?

Thanks,

Henry
