View Full Version : Where to find typical user story examples

Info

I went browsing around for some typical user stories, but I can't find much. I
assumed I'd find something useful at http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?UserStoryExamples,
but there's not much there. Any more informative links on this subject?

Thanks,

Typical user stories are the user requirements written by example.

For example, you grab the following requirement:
User authentication and authorization for each action and web page.

Then you translate it, or better yet, the on-site customer translates it
into:
1. John Doe logs on using his username johnd and his password djohn and then
he reaches the welcome page.
2. John selects the "project admin" link and he retrieves the "not
autorized" page.
....etc.

That's something you can create an automated test for using xUnit.

Cheers,
Guillermo.

In 1999 I went to visit Kent Beck to learn about XP. He and I drove
from his house in Grant's Pass Oregon up to Crater lake. During the
drive we created some user stories. He was driving and I was writing.

What I learned on that trip was that user stories have no form. They
can be a sentence, a word, a scrawled picture. It doesn't matter. A
user story is nothing more than a mnemonic device to help you remember
the conversations you've had with your customer. If "DF24" would
serve to remind you of some conversation that you and the customer
were having about a particular feature, then it would serve nicely as
a user story.

Here are some user stories from a project we are currently working on.

- Use ^^ to back up a page just like ../ in DOS.
- Graceful Shutdown.
- Clear Cache after changing virtual wiki.
- Export pages to files.
- Rename Page.
- Move page.

These may not mean much to you, but they mean a lot to the developers
and customers on this project.
