I'm looking for a good web source for learning about tuning Oracle SQL
statements.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

For specific tuning issues, go to http://asktom.oracle.com and search by
keyword.

Cheers,
Dave

I know you asked for a web resource but Oracle Tuning 101 is an excellent
book source. You could always read the tuning guide from the docs as well.

There are several good books on SQL tuning by Oracle Press and
O'Reilly, as I recall.

Just go to Amazon and search for "oracle sql tuning".

tuning 101 is a great book but it doesnt focus on sql.

Guy harrisons Sql Tuning book is all sql. However, he states that in
some cases using a cursor and then updating off the cursor can be
faster than doing an update with exists...

dont know if that is correct. I ran that every which way and how with
all types of table combinations and size, etc...

it was ALWAYS slower. and alot slower. Everything else seems accurate
as far as I can tell, but Im not a tuning expert.

May I second on Oracle Performance Tuning 101 as a good reference.
If you search this discussion Group you may be able to
find a set of useful sites put out in response to a question
in these lines asked sometimes earlier.

Web source? I'd dig into otn and metalink as primary
sources. And Steve Adams' and Jonathan's sites for the
bits not covered anywhere else.

But there is nothing better than a book. For SQL tuning
exclusively, still have to find anything more concise or
helpful than Guy Harrison's SQL Tuning. 2nd edition.

There's only one good book on Oracle tuning (and I've read quite a lot of what's on the market) and imho it's 'The art and science of Oracle performance tuning' by Christopher Lawson. Yes - Oracle 101 is brilliant ... this one's better :-) http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1904347010/ref=sr_aps_books_1_2/026 -0642492-7664436 "Petee" <dkj> wrote in message news:vfkbupkhi25md1@corp.supernews.com...
