I am learning dataGuard 9i, but I can not afford two machines.
Has anybody tried to put both instance on the same machine?
Will that work?

Thanks for you help

Define "work"?

If the system has a catestrophic failure & refuses to operate,
what have you gained by running Data Guard on a 2nd instance?

Are you using the OEM wizards?

Because if so, memory tells me that it can't be done on the same machine,
unless you do some fiddling with multiple listeners.

But... there's a simple solution. And it's called VMware.

Anytime you want to do things that need two (or more) machines, but you only
have one PC on which to practice, VMware will fix it. www.vmware.com.

ok, when we are crossposting propaganda:
vmware is good, but note that there is a free - and also good -
alternative on
http://bochs.sourceforge.net/

It wasn't "propaganda". I use it. I know it. It's free (for a trial). And it
works (albeit unsupported by Oracle). Three-node RACs on a laptop.
Application Server. Standby Database. Streams. All working reliably.

I will check out this Bochs thing. If it works, I'd be happy to recommend it
next time someone wants two machines on a PC.

Uh huh. Checked it out and it doesn't work.

Shame about that, but VMware is still the only thing I know of that can do a
RAC on a single PC.
