news:5lyj9kqj8rk0.dlg@just-for-message-id.alexander.skwar.name... Hi! I'm trying to instll 8.1.7 on a Mandrake Linux 9.1 PC. When I'm running "runInstaller" from the installation CD, it prints: Initializing Java Virtual Machine from
.../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded/linux/bin/jre . Please wait... After that, nothing happens. This somehow seems to start the Java version installed on the machine, in my case that's 1.4.0 of Sun. I think so, because when I run
.../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded/linux/bin/jre , I get the following message:
.../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded/linux/bin/jre : line 68: /usr/lib/jdk-1.4.0/bin/linux/native_threads/jre: No such file
or directory
.../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded/linux/bin/jre : line 68: exec: /usr/lib/jdk-1.4.0/bin/linux/native_threads/jre: cannot execute: No such file or directory [oracle@teich install]$ echo $JAVA_HOME /usr/lib/jdk-1.4.0 When I unset JAVA_HOME and JDK_HOME, runInstaller seems to start Java
1.1.8 from somewhere, presumably from the installation "CD". However, even with this Java version, nothing happens. [askwar@teich Shares]$ locale LANG=de_DE LC_CTYPE=de_DE LC_NUMERIC=de_DE LC_TIME=de_DE LC_COLLATE=de_DE LC_MONETARY=de_DE LC_MESSAGES=de_DE LC_PAPER="de_DE" LC_NAME="de_DE" LC_ADDRESS="de_DE" LC_TELEPHONE="de_DE" LC_MEASUREMENT="de_DE" LC_IDENTIFICATION="de_DE" LC_ALL= I also tried resetting all these to POSIX (ie. "unset"ing the variables), but this also doesn't help at all. Could the problems be caused by the installed glibc version (2.3.1)? If
so, how can I get 8i installed? IIRC you shouldn't cd to the cd-rom.
I take offensive with your sig.
It doesn't belong in a newsgroup which has nothing to do with politics and
religion.

I didn't burn the files to a cd-rom but just untarred the files, cd'd into
the directory and ran runInstaller.
However, doing
/Shares/Downloads/Linux/Oracle/8.1.7/linux81701/Disk1/runInstaller while
being in / also doesn't work.
/Shares/Downloads/Linux/Oracle/8.1.7/linux81701/Disk1/ is the directory
containing the untarred Disk1.
Besides, page 65 of the installation guide (linux_installguide_817.pdf)
says:
cd cdrom_mount_point
../runInstaller
I take offensive with your sig.
Sorry, didn't know that people are so easily offensed by something as
unimportant as a .sig. It was a random .sig which doesn't mean much.
PS: I'm offended by your munged email adress. In a technical group, I'd
expect that people know that something like this doesn't help at all to
"fight spam". You should really fix your adress. Thanks.
