View Full Version : Different Oracle Software packages

Hi,
There are different Oracle software packages at their download site:
- Database
- Application Server
- Development Tools
- Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence
- more
and each of these groups has sub-groups, e.g. under Application Server there
are
- Oracle9i Application Server
- Oracle9iAS Portal
I'm confused as to what each package does. What's the difference between
"Database" and "Application Server". Which one
do I need? And under each group, which sub-group do I need?
Any help is most appreciated!
Regards,
Eric

What problem are you trying to solve?
By which metrics have what values will an independent observer know when
the problem has been solved.
You question is very much like me saying the following...
Many tools are used in the construction trades to build buildings.
Which tool should I use?
Even given that you have the correct tool in your hand,
if it is not used wisely that is not the fault of the tool.
A shovel is a great tool for digging a hole,
but only when the "right" end of it comes into
contact with the ground. ;-)

Thanks for putting some humor into an otherwise serious question Anna.
What I'm trying to find out what each tools does, so I can chose which tool
to use. i.e. hammer to hit, screw driver to screw
and what to hit and what to screw I can determine myself.

So you don't want to read whitepapers and other marketing stuff,
readily available in the products section of http://otn.oracle.com or
http://www.oracle.com ?
Assuming you know Usenet and this group is a voluntarily business, and
people are answering in their free time, what makes you think anyone
will abstract and/or copy those whitepapers and post this here?

So what you are saying is that you are too lazy to do your own research
and you expect others to spoon feed you a solution.
Go RTFM on OTN.ORACLE.com & educate yourself.
Alternatively my consulting rate is $150/hour (USD).

Does your $150/hr include your rude and sarcastic manners?
The internet is a place where people freely exchange information. Those
willing to answer for those who ask. Of course, then there are people like
you, who assume too much (this goes to the other replier as well), too
arrogant, too impatient.
FYI: I have already looked and still don't understand. This is the reason
I'm here ... to get information. If I wanted to listen to a lecture, I'll go
to your private property - which I'm sure THIS isn't it.
Regards,
Eric

If you can't understand what is posted on OTN,
why should anyone believe that you can understand
any post made here?

What problem are you really trying to solve?
How will you (or anyone else) know when it has been solved?
