I heard somewhere recently that the word "putin" is extremely rude in French.
It's also the name of the President of Russia!

Not really. The word "Putain" merely refers to a active member of the
horizontal profession.
It is also also used as the equivalent of "oh damn":
"Oh putain" - "Oh pute" - "Oh merde"
It's also the name of the President of Russia!
That's Putin. Pronounced Pooteen.

Anyone remember an arab gentleman in the news a lot at one time called Mr Fachmi. Don't know if that's spelt correctly, but I seem to remember news readers being extremely careful how they pronounced it. :-)

An American spokesman during the war didn't seem to last too long, a Mr
Wayne Kerr. I'm not sure of the spelling but the BBC radio news readers
were very careful of the stress they place on each name.

He was a broadcaster on On The Hour, about 10 years ago ;-)
