Has anyone any thoughts about the merits of LCD versus CRT monitors? I note that there are differences in price, in size, in flexibility of possible modes and flickering. What is worrying me is colour and contrast, and the use of LCDs for editing digital photos or scanned slides. Maybe this is not a good test, but I was trying to edit a digital photo on my laptop. I found that small movements of my head or changes in the angle of the screen had gross effects on contrast and colour rendering of the picture.
Old LCDs (and laptop screens still) suffer from this, but new panels
found in good desktop LCD monitors don't suffer much from it at all.
Infact, as far as colour reproduction goes, LCDs can be better than
CRTs ( http://www.tomshardware.com/display/20030626/lcd-03.html and the
rest of the article).
As I see it, there are only 2 reasons to go for a CRT - costs less
money, and can go to higher resolutions than similar sized LCDs,
typically.
LCDs have them beat on sharpness, brightness, geometry... basically
everything image quality related. Good ones are a joy to use. My LCD is
the best computer upgrade I've ever bought :)

Its come down £400 since I bought it! I'm thinking about getting a
second one now ;)

They are much less flexible in their range of screen modes and the 'native' mode may not be the usual 4:3 ratio. In which case it will produce some image distortion which is a nuisance, I find, for graphics work.
Avoid 1280x1024 screens if this is a problem, other sizes are 4:3 so will
have the correct aspect in native and non native modes. If you can afford it
go for 1600x1200.
Saying that I would like to see more widescreen units come on the the market,
as the one trouble with a huge monitor is having to look up and down, left
and right is a lot less straining.

The scaling that good LCD are capable of is... good :)
They're not actually limited in the range of screen modes at all,
however, because...
may not be the usual 4:3 ratio. In which case it will produce some image distortion which is a nuisance, I find, for graphics work.
.... you can get them to just display 1:1, ie. with black borders if the
chosen mode doesn't match the ration of pixels on the panel.

It will only show distortion in 4:3 modes, native modes (5:4) are
allright. But again 5:4 monitors will show distortion in 4:3 modes.
And the same goes for normal CRT monitors.
I do have a Eizo L565 17", native resolution 1280-1024 everything is
perfectly square / round whatever. I think this is a much 'overdone'
problem which in fact isn't just on lCDs but also on all CRTs.
