As far as I know, LCD screens cannot yet beat CRTs in terms of accurate
colour reproduction with current technology.
If you are doing precise colour work then a CRT may be the only option,
but an LCD will be much sharper, will probably last longer and may be
easier on your eyes.
When choosing an LCD monitor, pick one with a low response time or high
refresh rate. Look for a high brightness and a high contrast ratio. If
possible, see one running so you can determine if you like the colour
reproduction. You may also want a monitor with dual inputs for using it
with two computers.
Incidentally, not all laptop screens suffer with a poor viewing angle
range. I can still see my screen at almost a right angle from either side.
Desktop LCDs are generally very good in this respect.
Don't accept any number of dud pixels - you'll regret it.
Hope that helps.

Check reviewers figures, most manufacturers' are well wide of reality.
They only perform very simple all back / all white screen tests instead of
various number of chequer squares, which is a closer to real usage.

They can, see my earlier post.

I read the article, but I still believe that LCDs cannot yet beat CRTs
in terms of colour matching. If I'm reading correctly, the Tom's Hardware
article says that at 6500K when using sRGB, the LaCie LCD is only as good
as their CRT.

And the other LCDs in the test were better... but since they all give
the 'correct' colour (at least as far as the eye can tell) across the
range, there's nothing to 'beat'. I should have said 'LCDs can't beat
CRTs, but they can match them'. And then given all their other
advantages, you'll see why I'd recommend LCDs over CRTs.
