View Full Version : printing over USB

Does anyone here have experience printing via the Simtec USB interface?
I've managed to get my BJC-3000 to print, by printing to file
(devices:$.USBPrinter_04a9_105c_29SAXK), but can't get my HP LaserJet 1200 to
respond at all.
It does appear in *usbdevices, so the usb connection is good. I've set
!Printers to print to devices:$.USBPrinter_03f0_0317_00CNCF804656 but nothing
happens when I print.
Also, although I can print from Impression, EasiWriter, Draw etc., printing
from !Zap fails (nothing happens!).
Can anyone offer any advice/suggestions please?
RiscPC RO4.02
!Printers 1.67

It sounds as though your printer (like my Canon BJC 2100) does not
print text (ASCII).
Try saving the file from Zap into Easiwriter, or Draw and printing
from there.
All my text printing is now done through Ovation or PEM (a program
by Peter Gaunt to improve text printing). Available at
http://www.dawnsun.net/software/pem.html

It does seem that way! Never mind, it's a minor issue really.
Try saving the file from Zap into Easiwriter, or Draw and printing from there.
That would seem sensible :-)
The big issue is getting the LaserJet to respond. I've just tried printing
another large-ish file. The Print Queue reports the percentage sent - all the
way up to 100%, but nothing comes out of the printer. Where /does/ it go
to?!?!?

Hi Ruth
I spent ages and so did Jonathan Briggs / Stewart Tyrrell / and teh Simtec
guys, trying to get my HP1200 to print via USB. Couldn't do it and went back
to parallel.
All the best

Canon stopped including Text printing (They call it 'Character Print Mode'
in most of thier bubblejets a while back, but then reintroduced it:-)
I've just checked the developer docs, and the BJC-3000 does support
'Character Print Mode'
I could writer a driver that supported it if you or anyone else is interested.
It would be 25 GBP

Ah, no you didn't, Adrian - you went back to FastSpool+, didn't you? The 1200 doesn't work on normal parallel does it?
Never had fastSpool+. Always used the Parallel port.
The principal reason I bought the USB card was to run an epson colour printer
on the parallel and at the same time have the HP1200 laser running on USB.
Always forgot to switch between the printers. I am very happy with the
Sinmtec USB and currently have another use for it and one day will buy a USB
keyboard/Mouse.
Current thinking is it's a driver issue (ie what data gets sent as start-of-job) - it's not a case of it printing over USB or parallel, but persuading it to print at all. FastSpool+ does this persuasion, nothing else does.
Nope prints fine on Parallel, see below.
When on USB (to file etc.) the data goes through the over-flow into the ether
(sorry but just love mixing metaphors).
In the absence of having one of these printers for me to test, is anyone driving these from a standard parallel port? If so, what PDF etc? If we can find this, then I'm sure the Simtec USB card will drive it fine.
Currently using StrongArm RiscPC (was issue 1 Arm600) Select 3 Printer
manager 1.90b4
Two PDFs installed function very well HP2100-PCL & HP2100-PS
Curious as to Ruth's set-up.
All the best

SARPC, RO4.02, !Printers 1.64a (Also tried 1.67 and 1.91!), using LJ4 and
PoScript2 drivers.
Very strange!

Ah, sorry Adrian, I'd got you confused with someone else....
This fact gives me a lot more to work on, although it would be nice to

HP1200 works ok from my system using HP2100PS PDF - provided I remember
to operate the dataswitch, otherwise my Deskjet870 wastes paper trying to
cope with unexpected postscript. Using !Printers 1.64a, RPC600 with 98Mb.
It does have difficulties with large documents, failing after printing
many pages ok. I suspect 16Mb memory is marginal in such cases - so far
been unable to locate appropriate 64Mb 100-pin DIMM to test this idea.
Cheers,
Steve
