news:bdcl5b$k1q$1@news.onet.pl... Hi, I have problem with my HP Omnibook 6000 (PIII 600 MHz) when it is start, then run OK, but after approx. 1 hour is hot and hang
on. I have checked the procesor, RAM, HDD and still is not good. Have you some suggestions? maybe some url? Best Regards Tomasz zawisl@poczta.onet.pl
Does the cooling fan come on Tomasz? My wife has the exact same model, and
it blows out very hot air now and then, if the fan didn't work it would
definitely cause a big problem.

Yes, the cooling fan is working several minutes, but working only on the
power
supply. On the battery not working, I have changed the BIOS set-up for best
performance
but it gave no changes.

Have you seperated the heatsink from the cpu at any time? If so HP recommend
installing a new thermal pad, but you should at least use good quality
thermal compound.

That might be normal, my fan rarely comes on working from batteries. How did
you go about checking the CPU and RAM? If the fault is on the system board
it will likely not be economical to repair, unless you can find the same
model with a cracked screen to salvage the parts from. I would make sure
this isn't a software issue before deciding it is faulty though.

Don't apologise Tomasz, your English is perfectly understandable!

Never before, it was working well 4 months (this is "second hand"), after
suddenly crash. Is possible that the seller have makes some changes?

The CPU and RAM was checked by the service on another notebook.

How to check it? the software was changed, firstly was the Win 98 and Linux
Red Hat 8.0
(at the same time), the HDD was changed because had bad blocks,
now is only Win98.
The serviceman say that is the mainboard giulty.

You could time the crashes. If they always occur at about the same time then
it could be a thermal fault. If it's random you might have a corrupt system
file. Win98 isn't a very stable OS, I would try Linux again as it has a very
stable kernel, even temporarily just to find out if that's the problem.
Does the computer just freeze or does it give a crash error message? It
might be a bad driver causing the problem.

I would agree, it is very likely. Maybe you'll find a scrap 6000 with a good
mainboard, good luck!

In addition to looking at hardware problems, review what is running in
the background that might be raising CPU usage to very high percentages.
The usual suspects: virus program running in background, animated
screensavers, CD burning, but anything will contribute if it is active.
If the laptop was opened at one time, the thermal pad/thermal compound
or a loose heat sink are real possibilities and will make the machine
crash or lock up as you experience. Also, reseat the RAM.

You could time the crashes. If they always occur at about the same time
then it could be a thermal fault.
Always the same time, approx. 1 - 1,5 hour and the comuter stop.
Does the computer just freeze or does it give a crash error message? It might be a bad driver causing the problem.
Computer hang on without any message, just going slowly, slowly, stop
is it through by about 1 minutes
I will look for the Omnibook 6000 scrap :-(
Thanks

I may be wrong -- it's been a few years -- but I have a vague recollection
that one of the BIOS kits for the OB6000 from perhaps two years ago
had a bug that didn't correctly control the fan. (We did run into this
problem, but I'm not going to guarantee that it was in the OB6000 and
might not even have been in an HP machine.)
<rummage through notes> My logs suggest that there were several BIOS
updates for the 6000 in mid-2001. The latest I show is version 1.82
from June 2002; is this what is currently loaded?

How to check the BIOS version?

How to check the BIOS version?
Just open the BIOS setup screens at boot time by the usual method of
pressing F2 when the POST messages are first displayed. The BIOS
version should be displayed at the top of the screen.
The version is probably also displayed with the POST messages, but
they'll go by too fast to read with any confidence.
<digs up notes again> The BIOS version for the 6100 will probably
appear as "EAxyy" or "EAMxyy" where the version number is x.yy . The
letter prefixes identify the platform to which it applies; in this case
EA (EAM for at least one version) identifies the OB6000.
