View Full Version : Web Connect stopped working - how to fix?

On that day we got that last update, using a WebConnect option at any
banking site stopped working. The file download briefly flashes up, but
Quicken 2005 doesn't start up nor does it download. I also tried
choosing it from the Quicken internet browser, but no luck there either.
I found the extension handling for QFX and made a small change and then,
the next time I started Quicken, it asked if I wanted to fix the
association, but it didn't make a difference.

Any ideas, please? Thanks.

I haven't been able to open a WebConnect file directly into Quicken since
2004 H&B. I have to save the stmt.qfx file to my computer and then import it
into Quicken. At one time, you could just open the file and the transactions
appeared.

I don't believe your problem is related to a Quicken "update"; I
just had Q2005 deluxe do a program/fi update, then closed
Quicken, initiated a web-connect download. Quicken opened and
"imported" the transactions as usual.

You say that when you initiate the process from within Quicken,
you have "no luck"; but that is not very descriptive. What
exactly happens?

It is possible that your link between qw.exe and the qfx
extension is missing/faulty; I note you say you made a "small
change", but if you got it wrong, that might explain your
problem. You did not say what the link was *before* you made
your small change. (Did you install another version of Quicken
between your last successful web-connect download and your first
unsuccessful one?)

My qfx file (in Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types)
has 'C:\Program Files\Q2005\QW.EXE -X "%1"' in the "Application
used to perform action" for the "Open" "Action". (Naturally you
must use the correct *path* for your installation).

You could also try saving the downloaded qfx file to your hard
drive, then opening Quicken and "import"ing it to see if the
resulting behavior gives any better indication of the problem.

A simple possible fix is to delete your temporary Internet
files. In Internet Explorer:

Tools > Internet Options > General > Delete Files

If nothing else works, you could try reinstalling Q2005, then
insure it is current release-wise (One Step Update with nothing
checked for download), close and restart Quicken, and try your
web-connect download again.

Assume you are using IE for your browser - try deleting your temporary
internet files: TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>DELETE FILES.

Has worked for me - this has been posted here several times in past.

You may want to check your Internet Tools->Options->Advanced for the "Do not
save encrypted files to disk" setting.

And if you are running Windows XP, SP2 turned on the Windows Firewall. By
default, this will probably block the Webconnect site. You have to add it
(I think it is www.webconnect.com) as a trusted site. This can also be an
issue with 3rd party firewalls, such as Norton Internet Security.

John:

1) Erasing the cache in IE seems to have resolved the problem for me in
Q'05 - thanks! Now I will need to see if I have to do it every time ...

2) The download idea, which I had already tried, didn't work, because Q'05
does not permit QIF imports into "checking, savings, 401(k) and all other
brokerage accounts". (this is the message from a pop-up I get when I try to
import the QIF account.

Thanks for your help - always excellent!

By the way, this problem only seemed to happen with downloads at sites where
I had to actually log in an a pop-up browser window within Quicken. Sites
where I could connect directly - e.g., my credit card company, where the
download happens directly with Quicken logging in, and no browser window
opening seems to work perfectly every time.

I'm a bit confused by Quicken's numerous names for more or less the same
thing - webconnect, direct connect, billpay, etc. - excuse any mix-ups

Deleting the Temporary Internet Files also fixed it for me. Thanks
everyone.

Quicken has, for some time, offerred three "methods" for
downloading: QIF file; web-connect; and Direct. (The QIF file
method is the one that is being largely phased out).

QIF file downloads are the oldest, most primative, method. The
file format is simple, and the allowable content is extremely
limited. With this method, you elect to download a file from
the financial institution (you *must* initiate this type of
download from the fi's site) to the hard drive on your pc. Then
from within Quicken, you elect to "import" (Import>QIF) that
downloade QIF file.

The next "best" method is called web-connect; this method
requires the overt involvement of Internet Explorer. This
method can be initiated from the financial institution's web
site or from Quicken. This method always involves you explicity
logging on the the fi's web site and overtly initiating the
download; you can optionally elect to have Quicken immediately
process the download (without saving the data in a file), and/or
you can elect to save the downloaded data to a file on your pc
which you can then "import" (Import>WebConnect) into Quicken.
The biggest drawback to this method of download is that it
requires a separate logon/download process for every financial
institution ... and sometimes a separate download process for
each account at a given financial institution. Still, it is
light-years ahead (in convenience) of downloading/importing via
QIF.

The third, and "best" method of downloading is called "direct"
download. With this method you never see the browser (though I
do believe it is involved), you never have to manually logon to
an fi site, you never have to select accounts/transactions to
download. Every one of your financial institutions that offer
direct downloads will be downloaded when you elect One Step
Update, and enter your Pin Vault password. It is about as
simple, complete and painless as you can get.

I can not address your mention of billpay; I do not use billpay.
But it is not a "method" of download. I have always tended to
think that billpay using Quicken would only be handled via
"direct" download (and upload in this case). I have not looked
into whether one could use billpay through Quicken with an
institution that only offered web-connect; I suspect that if
someone else here is doing that, they could clear up my lack of
knowledge.
