My new Gateway has an Intel adapter and the software installed for it. I don't
use it and was getting a "cable disconnected" message in the system tray until
I disabled it. This seems clearly to be a piece of hardware designed to connect
computers directly by cable. I don't know if that qualifies as a "firewire."

They have at least 2 firewire ports....."Si" <simon@nospam.com> wrote in message "Ben Myers" <ben_myers_spam_me_not@charter.net> wrote in message news:3f43bf10.10740394@news.charter.net... Steve, Possibly the easiest way to answer the question is to look at the listof devices in the Device Manager within the System icon of Control Panel. If you see any device labeled "Firewire" or "1394", you've got it. The fairly recent Pavilions I've kicked around do not have Firewire. My 'fairly recent' 733.uk has one port front, one back. However 'fairly recent' in this case is already an older model. Two models I looked at in PCW today also had at least front mounted ports. Si.

Nope, that's your network adapter...

Well, there are a number of "network adapters," including AOL's. This one gives
the message that a "cable is disconnected." That sure sounds like a piece of
hardware. And, in fact, an AOL tech confirmed that. I disabled it to get rid of
the message, but still access the Internet through another "mysterious"
connection.

LOL

Oh, good job my belt is tight, I might just have split my sides laughing.

The AOL 'network adapter' is in fact your 'Network connection', the software
side of things that handles your Dial Up (DUN).

If you go to Start, Connect To and click 'Show all connections' you will
notice you have some Dial Up connections, and some LAN....

oh, why bother...
