What *exactly* does "cut out" mean? Does it not work *at all*? Does it
work *before*/*during* login? Etc..
Also, *when* did you install your external mouse? Did the touchpad
stop working (shortly) after you installed the external mouse?
How is the mouse connected (PS/2, USB, serial)?
What OS do you have?
Reasons for all these questions: It is quite possible that you have a
software conflict which stops the touchpad from working. For example my
mouse stpped working shortly after login, due to a conflict between the
Logitech MouseWare software and some HP-specific software (on Windows XP
Professional in my case).

Hi Frank:
*Cut Out* in this case would be purchased laptop around 20 days ago,
took out of box, plugged in power cable to charge battery and then
turned on laptop and was greeted with the new user set up for Windows
XP home, system came as you must be aware with preloaded software
besides the Windows XP. It came with Corel WordPerfect 10 and the
Corel Suite, Arc Soft Photo software as well as the HP photo software
and Norton Anti Virus and it also came with the One Touch Software for
the one touch buttons on the unit, as well as the HP drivers for the
NIC and V.92 Modem as well as sound and graphics and Synpatics touch
pad.
The unit worked for around 2 hours and even though it looked like it
was still "on" and functioning the touchpad simply stopped responding
to movements to my touch. Since I use laptops regularly we also have
learned they are *problematic* and we carry both USB and PS mice with
us when working with them. On inserting the USB mouse the generic
Windows drivers were present and the Synpatic drivers were
automatically switched to generic. On calling the HP support center
they said it could be a software issue and as I regretted doing so, I
did reformat the unit and found that the laptop had no touchpad
function in the 2 Hours 32 minutes it took to reload everything back
to spec (Out of box), it was then determined this must be a Hardware
Issue and I received a case number and RMA and they were going to pick
this unit up. After the lap top sat for half a day, I turned it on to
check it out one more time and low and behold the touchpad worked
again.
Another 1 hour of my placing other software on the unit as Adobe 5.0
Full and needed work software and programs and the sucker stopped
responding again.
Called again and this time they said get the newest drivers and make
sure the BIOS was switched from AUTO to BOTH, since I am familure with
the process the setting had been switch when we were troubleshooting
previously.
After updated driver again no movement from the touchpad and the
drivers kept appearing and disappearing and we were getting no where.
This is when myself and HP technical support figured out the unit was
heating up from the battery and the circuits were hot and more than
likely was the problem.
Offered to repair the unit in house from my own agency, HP said as I
wrote above. No Go. Have been mulling over if I should replace with
another touchpad from another of our lap top units and void out 1 year
warranty. The reason here is because I believe that HP will not
replace unit in laptop but will try the restore process. I have since
been on the phone with HP and they said simply remove the battery and
hard drive and send back empty unit and they will repair that way.
Which may be the way to go. At least I will not lose my software and
time and trouble to re-ghost the drive.
It surely is a stumper.
