Sounded like a no-brainer initially. I have the 2410 attached to an XP box
and want to print from a Win 98 box. The HP site wants the HP870c driver
loaded on the Win 98 box for this type of configuration, but the output is
awful. I originally had the 2410 attached to the Win 98 box and I could
print to it from the XP box fine. Since I have switched, I have run into
trouble.
There must be a smarter way...any thoughts?

Um... Switch the PSC2410Xi back to the Windows 98 computer? Maybe a bit
inconvenient, but it did work for you earlier.
HP does a generally miserable job of supporting networked low-end printers, if
at all. The 2410Xi is considered low-end... Ben Myers

The DeskJet 870 driver might be OK for printing black text, but not for color.
Have you tried simply changing the "port" designator from the 2410 installation
on the Win 98 machine to point to the \\XP_computer\PSC_2410_sharename ?
