I installed a spyware remover called Spybot - Search and Destroy which,
incidentally, works pretty well. However, it seems to have messed up my HP
DVD Writer 200j.

The drive still reads all DVD and CDs but it won't write on them. I use HP
Recordnow and when I try to record on a blank DVD disk I'm now getting a
message that "No compatible recordable or rewritable device could be found
on your system." I reinstalled HP RecordNow and uninstalled and
reinstalled the DVD drive. Nothing helped. Does anyone have an idea how I
can fix this?

Thanks,
Corse

I use Spybot too but don't see how it could be at fault. However, things
happen. Try opening Sypbot and select the Recovery. For the Recovery
Button, it says:
"Use this button if you notice some problems that have occurred during a
recent removal of problems, and you want to undo some changes."

See if that might help you.

Ed,

Thanks for responding. I tried your suggestion but it didn't work.
However, I did get out the DVD writer disk and reinstall HP RecordNow and
DLA from the disk and now it works so whatever happened that fixed it. I
like Spybot but I expect it's a little unpredictable.

I might add that when running any, repeat any, program that is going to 'remove' things from your
computer...READ...repeat...READ...what it is going to remove. All of these programs allow you to
preview the suspect things that it proposes to remove, READ these propositions, BEFORE allowing them
to be deleted. I had this same problem with 'OptOut', learned from experience...luck...

Tried system restore? Go back before you installed Spybot.

Si.
