Hello all,
I tried to upgrade the memory by adding 256 MB PC2100 DDR made by Centon. I
installed the new memory module in the empty slot of my computer, and
the pc would not boot after that; when I turned the pc on, it beeped a
few times, but nothing appeared on the monitor. I removed and
reinstalled the new memory card, but got the same results. The brackets
on the bottom and top of the module holder clicked into place securely
each time. After removing the new module, the computer is working
again, so I returned the memory to the store where I bought it. The HP
specs on the memory are PC 2100 DDR like I bought, but, there is another
part of the memory spec that says "speed pc2100/pc1600". My guess is that
the new memory was not compatible the existing memory. When I asked HP tech
support about the problem I got different replies, one of which was to buy
memory from HP. On the HP website I found a 256MB, pc2100 DDR memory like I
wanted, but when I looked at the details there was a list of machines for
which HP would vouch for compatibility and the 522n was not on that list.
I have two questions: 1) is there someone with experience upgrading memory
on a Pavilion 522n who can recommend a memory part number that is known to
work with the factory installed memory?
2) What does the "speed pc2100/pc1600" mean? In other words why do they put
both numbers there?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Tom,
PC2100 and PC1600 are two different speed grades of DDR memory. PC2100 is
faster, and, as a rule, faster memory will run in a motherboard/CPU compo that
requires a lower speed.
I've never been impressed by Centon products. Maybe it's just me. Why not try
Crucial, Micron's retail outlet for memory? ... Ben Myers

Tom, when there is a question about what kind of memory will work, do NOT
deal with memorywizards.com
If you return the memory that doesn't work they won't give you a refund.
They will accuse you of fraud.

John,
Thanks for the "heads up". At this point I am thinking of following Ben's
advice and buying from Crucial. My concern about any mail order place is
whether they will pay for return shipping. If I get another module that
doesn't work the return hassle is bad enough without having to pay for it
as well. It sounds like memorywizards is much worse than that.

It is customary in mail order for the buyer to pay for return shipping and for
any refund not to include original shipping charges. Exceptions to this are
rare, whether we're talking computer hardware or any other goods.
