My D: and E: drives with a CD-RW and DVD have disappeared from the menu. The
device manager shows them with an exclamation point in a yellow circle. When
updating/troubleshooting, it says the driver does not work because it is
corrupted. Re-installing says it has the same version. What do you do!?

Get rid of AOL and get a REAL ISP. When you installed AOL's crappy
software, it turned a perfectly working computer into a pile of crap
and caused problems with your CDRW and DVD drives disappearing.
AOL's software is known to change settings on computers and make
computers unstable and crash.

If you are running Windows XPee, you can take advantage of one of its few good
features, the ability to roll back the system software to a previous known good
oprational state. Of course, the rollback itself is a patch to cover up the
problem which has existed forever with Micro$oft operating systems, namely, why
the hardware drivers get messed up to begin with.
You might also go into the motherboard BIOS and reset the CMOS and Non-Volatile
RAM (NVRAM) data, aka ESCD. Sometimes the Windows PnP data gets corrupted,
causing all manner of wierd problems.
Finally, if the system is more than 2 years old, replace the C2032 3v Lithium
battery on the motherboard... Ben Myers
